The traditional AFL ANZAC Day Clash at the ‘G’ between Collingwood and Essendon is by far and away the biggest AFL match of the home and away season. Regardless of whether you’re a Bombers or Pies supporter, the always-stirring rendition of The Last Post should be experienced at least once by every Australian and New Zealander; and the eerie silence where you can hear a pin drop followed by the crowd going ballistic the moment the starting siren sounds is something that simply cannot be done justice with words alone.
Unfortunately, the most recent ANZAC Day Clash wasn’t a close contest – the ‘Pies decimating the undermanned Bombers by a massive 69-points. With 12 of their best players suspended due to the ‘Supplements Saga’, the Bombers fielded a team of rookies and fill-in players that appeared overawed by the occasion early in the match which resulted in Collingwood booting eight goals to the Bombers’ one in the first quarter. To the Bombers credit, they played valiantly in the second half to actually win it by 7 points, however it was a case of ‘too-little-too-late’ as ultimately the ‘Pies were comprehensively the better side on the day which of course was reflected on the scoreboard.
