The traditional AFL ANZAC Day Clash at the ‘G’ (the Melbourne Cricket Ground) between Collingwood and Essendon is by far and away the biggest AFL match of the home and away season. Regardless of whether you’re a Bombers or Pies supporter, the always-stirring rendition of The Last Post should be experienced at least once by every Australian and New Zealander. The eerie silence where you can hear a pin drop followed by the crowd going ballistic the moment the starting siren sounds is something that simply cannot be done justice with words alone.
Following the ‘Supplements Saga’ that saw 12 Essendon players unable to take part in the 2016 match, the 2017 edition of the ANZAC Day Clash saw the Bombers snap a three game ANZAC Day Clash losing streak to beat the Pies by 18 points in front of 87,665 fans in cold and wet conditions. Taking just a nine point lead into the final quarter, Essendon kicked three un-answered goals in the first nine minutes to jump out to a 26 point lead to effectively kill the contest and leave Collingwood supporters ruing their side’s earlier inaccuracy in front of goal – the Pies kicking 11.16 (82) compared to the Bombers’ much more efficient 15.10 (100). The man-of-the-match ANZAC Day Medal was awarded to young Bomber, Joe Daniher, who was dominant all over the ground with 3.4, 16 possessions, eight marks and six inside-50’s.
