Rugby League World Cup – A History
With a history stretching well beyond that of the Rugby World Cup, the Rugby League World Cup‘s roots trace back to the 1930’s when France began campaigning for a World Cup of rugby league. It wasn’t until 1953 that the decision was made to hold a Rugby League World Cup which would be hosted by France in 1954. That first Rugby League World Cup was won by Great Britain who defeated France in the final in Paris.
The Rugby League World Cup (RLWC) has been held sporadically since its inaugural tournament. Competitions have been held as regularly as every two years and as infrequently as every eight. The second RLWC was held three years after the first and was hosted by Australia. This proved to be the first time that Australia would win the tournament. Since that first victory, Australia has notched up a total of ten Rugby League World Cup titles! Other winners of the Rugby League World Cup are Great Britain (now divided into England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland), who have won the tournament three times (1954, 1960, 1972); and New Zealand, who have won the tournament once (2008).
The most recent Rugby League World Cup, held in 2013, is considered to have been the most successful to date. The tournament featured fourteen teams, split into 4 groups (2×4 and 2×3). The groups with four teams featured the higher seeded nations. Following the success of the 2013 RLWC, it was decided that the tournament wold be held every four years, in-line with the other World Cup football tournaments.
