State of Origin is unquestionably one of the biggest occasions in Australian Sport. State vs State, and often Mate vs Mate, this is when you stand for the land you come from. Widely regarded as the true pinnacle of Rugby League, the Origin series pits the best players from New South Wales and Queensland against each other over three games of brutal hits and exhilarating footy. Supreme talent, sell-out crowds of passionate fans, and 37 years of history have made this series what it is today.

The State of Origin Series game record currently stands at 49-31 to Queensland, who also take the series record, with 23 series wins to New South Wales 13. Queensland’s dominance has stood firm over the last decade, with now 11 series wins from 12. Although many believe the Blues are on their way back up…

A squad featuring the youthful James Tedesco, and calm heads of James Maloney and Jarryd Hayne, was expected to finally get one over an aged Queensland team in 2017. A dominant Game I performance from the Blues had fans believing. A seemingly unflappable Johnathan Thurston proceed to slightly dent that belief when he landed a pressure conversion to give Queensland a stunning 18-16 win in Game II. However, all hope was not lost as the biggest show in Rugby League rolled into Brisbane for Game III. But it was yet another case of Déjà vu for loyal NSW supporters, as their promising team were handed a lesson in performing when it counts, to the stinging tune of 22-6.

And now we wait. The Origin juggernaut will return on June 6th 2018 for what’s sure to be another ripper of a series! To add to the intrigue, Game I will be played at Melbourne’s MCG for the first time since 2015.
