The seventh edition of the Rugby World Cup Sevens will be staged in the San Francisco area of Northern California, USA. The stadiums that will be hosting matches are AT&T Park, home of the San Francisco Giants baseball team, and Avaya Stadium, home of the San Jose Earthquakes soccer team. The dates of the 2018 Rugby World Cup Sevens are still to be confirmed.
First staged at the home of Rugby Sevens, Scotland in 1993, teams compete for the Melrose Cup – named after the Scottish town of the same name where the first ever game of Rugby Sevens was played. In the six tournaments have that have been staged to date, Fiji and New Zealand have been the two dominant forces of the tournament – claiming two Melrose Cup’s each, and one of each figuring in all but two of the finals. Reining champions, New Zealand will no doubt go into the 2018 Rugby World Cup Sevens as raging favourites, however the side taking the field in 2018 will be much different to the one that demolished England 33-0 in the 2013 final. However, that’s not to say that New Zealand won’t be up against some stiff competition! Having missed out on competing in the 2013 final, the proud nation of Fiji will be raring to bring home some silverware again; whilst Australia’s recent form in the IRB Sevens World Series has been promising and it’s side has the ideal combination of experience and youth!
