Join the Socceroos in the United Arab Emirates as they defend their title as the reigning AFC Asian Cup champions in 2019! The 2019 AFC Asian Cup will be the 17th edition of the AFC Asian Cup and will be hosted for the second time by the United Arab Emirates.
The AFC Asian Cup is an international football tournament run by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). First run in 1956, the AFC Asian Cup is the oldest continental football championship on the planet, after Copa América. Up until the 1980’s, the tournament was dominated by South Korea and Iran. However since 1984, Japan and Saudi Arabia have won 7 of the previous 8 finals. Japan currently holds the most titles, with four to it’s name. The team that wins the Asian Cup automatically qualifies for the FIFA Confederations Cup.
For the first time, the 2019 AFC Asian Cup tournament will be contested by 24 teams, after expanding from the 16-team format which has been used since 2004. Following this format, the group stages of the tournament will be made up of six groups, each featuring four teams. The knockout stage will then be made up of 16 teams. The United Arab Emirates automatically qualify for the tournament with the remaining 23 places being determined through a qualifying competition which began in 2015 and will run through to March 2018.
