Melbourne’s MCG arena will play host to Stage of Origin Game 1 in 2018. Making it the first time in the event’s history that an opening match will be played outside of New South Wales or Queensland. It also marks the 25th anniversary of the first origin clash held at the MCG. The Blues often perform well here, and it will be interesting to see if they can keep up their Melbourne momentum and play to win on the night. While the consensus may favour the Maroons, given they have dominated the series throughout its history, there’s still a solid chance the Blues will outperform them come crunch time. 2017’s loss will still be feeling fresh and the lads are likely to come out guns blazing. All will be revealed closer to the draw when each state names its respective team members. One thing we know the State of Origin will deliver is a footy match for the record books.

The Mighty MCG

The Melbourne Cricket Ground last staged the Origin for Game II back in 2015, when a record breaking 91,513 fans flocked to the arena. Did the crowd support from their southern brothers help get NSW over the line that time? Food for thought, indeed. There’s no doubt about the arena’s ability to raise fans adrenaline energy through the proverbial roof. And not just because of its capacity to hold mega crowds but because it’s cemented in Australian folk lore as the true oz home of sport. The ‘G’ as it’s colloquially known is more than just a sports venue. It’s a place where memories are made, and childhood dreams come alive. Be there in the flesh for Game 1 and you’ll immediately understand what the hype is all about.
