The Difference Between the Isle of Man TT & the Manx Grand Prix
Published by on May 10, 2024
Are you into motorcycle racing? Do you enjoy being right where the action is? Then you've probably heard about the Isle of Man TT and the Manx Grand Prix.
They both happen to take place on the scenic Isle of Man, but they each offer a different experience. Let's break down what makes them special.
WHAT IS THE ISLE OF MAN TT?
The TT has been around since 1907, making it one of the oldest and most prestigious motorcycle races in the world.
The event is the ultimate test of skill and guts, where riders tackle winding street circuits that snake through villages, soar over hills, and along coastal roads. Speeds can exceed 300km/h, pushing riders to their limits and beyond. Often dubbed 'the world's last great motorsport event', tens of thousands make the pilgrimage each year to watch heroic drivers put it all on the line for glory. And one of the most unique things about the TT is that spectators can get unbelievably close to the action, watching from behind a hedge or out the front of a roadside pub.
The event's rich history is steeped in triumphs, tragedies, and records that push the boundaries of human achievement. From the legendary names etched in its hall of fame to the spine-tingling moments captured on its unforgiving roads, the TT is a spectacle that captivates the imagination and fuels the adrenaline of all who experience it.
So, whether you're a die-hard fan or just along for the ride, the Isle of Man TT promises an experience like no other.

WHAT IS THE MANX GRAND PRIX?
The Manx Grand Prix, formerly known as the Isle of Man Classic TT, is an annual motorcycle event hosted by the Manx Motorcycle Club as part of the Isle of Man Festival of Motorcycling, held on the world famous 37.73-mile Isle of Man TT Mountain Course.
Less famous than the slightly older Isle of Man TT, the Manx Grand Prix has its own unique history and heroes... from the amateur days to the all-time lap record by Phil Read (faster than the TT lap record!) before he went on to win the TT in his first year, to the first female race winner on the Isle of Man and of course the strong classic sub-culture that has driven this event for decades.
While the challenging terrain of mountainous bends and cobblestone streets remain the same as the TT, the overall spectacle focuses on the rare, vintage and exotic racing and touring bikes from around the globe that fans and riders love to see on the Mountain Course. However, in recent years the classes have changed to include both classic and more modern machines, with the modern races closely aligned to the Isle of Man TT Senior and Junior races in similar Supersport and Supertwin classes. This gives leading and upcoming TT competitors the opportunity to achieve their goals around the Mountain Course – while providing optimal entertainment for the diehard fans.
But, rest assured, classic motorcycle racing of the highest profile is still on the menu at the Manx Grand Prix! The Classic Manx Grand Prix races build on the Island’s impeccable reputation for high profile classic motorcycle racing, with the world’s best teams and many of the leading TT competitors taking part – including the likes of McGuinness, Dunlop, Rutter, Johnson and Hillier in recent years.
