Love LIVE Tennis? We do! But did you know that the history of the sport can be traced back to the 12th century in northern France? It is believed that tennis evolved from a game called “jeu de paume” or “game of the palm” where, as you might have guessed, players struck a ball with the palm of their hand. The game was played indoors and evolved to players wearing gloves, then using paddles, and finally racquets. This game still exists and is commonly known as “real tennis” or “royal tennis”.

In the mid 19th century, a game was developed which combined two games, both similar to squash. Crucially though, they played the game outdoors, on a croquet lawn. Then, in 1872, the world’s first tennis club was founded in Leamington Spa in the UK. A year later, a very similar game emerged which was commonly called “Sticky”. It’s creator, Major Walter Clopton Wingfield is widely credited for the development of modern tennis as he was key to popularising the sport. He produced a boxed set which included everything needed to play the game, including rules. Thousands of sets of his game were shipped globally within the first year. Three years later, in 1877, the world’s oldest tennis tournament, the Wimbledon Championships, were established and the rest is history.
