What is Sportsnet's Wonthaggi Escorted Tour?

Sportsnet has long been partnering with the Australian Grand Prix Corporation to offer a range of packages to the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, and we have assisted thousands of fans in making their Phillip Island dreams come true. But the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit has some obvious geographical challenges… being on a small island.

Traditionally, fans either stay in Melbourne and commute to the track each day, or we offer a range of accommodations closer to the track, but accommodation on or nearby the island can be extremely scarce on Grand Prix weekend.

Enter, Wonthaggi! Wonthaggi is a cute coastal town on the Bass Coast, about a 40-minute drive to the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit. Wonthaggi is a walkable township, with cafes, restaurants, pubs, supermarkets and shopping all in the central vicinity. And it serves as the perfect home base during Grand Prix weekend!

Sportsnet’s home base of choice is the MJ McMahon Motel, Wonthaggi’s newest motel with 26 freshly furnished and comfortable rooms. The centrally-located motel is connected to the Wonthaggi Workmen’s Club, which pays homage to Wonthaggi’s traditional coal mining history and offers quality means and well-priced drinks, just a few metres from your clean, contemporary accommodation.

From the MJ McMahon Motel, we have breakfast each morning and then transfer to the track to enjoy all of the action of the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, with grandstand and hospitality tickets available. Then we all transfer back to Wonthaggi together, where dinner and drink options are plentiful.

Benefits of the Wonthaggi Escorted Tour

Close, but not too close

Only a 40-minute commute to the track (pending traffic), you’re conveniently close to the track but also avoid the intense crowds at all of the cafes and restaurants on Phillip Island.

Dedicated Sportsnet tour host

While all of our Australian MotoGP™ travel packages are supported by on-ground staff, this is the only escorted tour that offers a Sportsnet tour host with you every step of the way for any questions, troubleshooting or just to have a chat and a laugh!

Private coach transfers

All of our packages include transfers to the track, but generally use the event-organised shuttle service, which can get crowded! The benefit of this private tour is that you also get a private coach transfer from door to door with a friendly local driver. No waiting with the crowds at the bus stop in Wonthaggi!

Small tour vibes

As this is an small tour, you have the opportunity to get to know the other guests, host and coach driver as you all enjoy the weekend together. The welcome dinner on Thursday night and the daily breakfast included in your package is a great chance to get to know your fellow 'Wonthaggiytes'.

Freedom to do your own thing

Although it does offer friendly small-tour vibes, the benefit of being in Wonthaggi is that you also have the freedom to do your own thing when not at the track. Go to the supermarket and stock up on snacks, head out for dinner by yourself or have a few drinks back at the Workmen’s Club together – it’s totally up to you!
